STEP-BY-STEP

How to use this tool

  1. Select the actual long or short direction.
  2. Enter average filled entry and exit prices rather than unfilled chart levels.
  3. Copy minimum tick size and dollar tick value for the exact contract.
  4. Enter whole contracts and the current round-turn fee per contract.
  5. Estimate total slippage across entry and exit in ticks per contract.
  6. Compare the result with the broker statement and record actual net P&L in the journal.
WORKED EXAMPLE

See the calculation in context

A two-contract long moving 10 points on a 0.25-tick product produces 40 ticks per contract. At $0.50 per tick, gross P&L is $40 before fees and slippage.

Calculation method

Directional ticks = (exit − entry) ÷ tick size for a long, or (entry − exit) ÷ tick size for a short. Gross P&L = directional ticks × tick value × contracts. Net P&L subtracts commissions and entered slippage.

AVOID THESE ERRORS

Common mistakes

  1. Using a full-size tick value for a micro contract
  2. Reversing long and short direction
  3. Entering points where the tool expects price
  4. Ignoring average fills on scaled entries or exits
  5. Leaving commission and slippage at zero without verifying
  6. Treating estimated P&L as guaranteed before execution
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions and answers

Can this calculate an open trade?

It can estimate P&L using a current reference price, but actual closing P&L depends on the fill and all charges.

Why can the tick count be fractional?

The entered prices may not align with the minimum tick increment, or the instrument specification may be wrong.

Does this include currency conversion?

No. Products settled in a currency different from the account may require a separate conversion.
